„ROYAL FOREST” NATURAL RESERVATION. A piece of heaven

On this small territory called Middle Prut, the nature has created an exclusive set of monuments: from the geological, paleontological to the flora and fauna. Original combinations of stone and water, vegetation and animals, earth and air have created a paradise landscape, still unknown by many admirers of beauty, but worth visiting.

„Royal Forest”: the name of a wonderful corner of nature. It was established in 1993. The total area is 6032 ha. It represents a floodplain forest located between the villages Cobani (Glodeni) in the north and Pruteni (Falesti) in the south, with a length of 40 km. It is the oldest massive forest land and one of the oldest floodplain forests in Europe. The forest represents the plant associations of oak, poplar and willow. Here can be found rare plant species as wild vines, angelica archangelica (aromatic herbaceous plant with large leaves and greenish white flowers whose root is used in pharmacy), variegated tulip, white snowdrop, scilla bifolia (herbaceous plant of the lily family, from whose bulb grow two or three shiny leaves and a stalk bearing blue, pink or white flowers). Within the reservation many elements of rare fauna survived: deer noble, otter, wild cat, marten, stone marten, weasel, pond turtles, deer, egret, swan. In 2005 the bison was acclimatized.

Butesti keys. At south eastern part of  Butesti village, the stream Camenca dig a picturesque gorge by the string of toltra (limestone reefs consist of remnants of corals, shellfish, algae, animals and marine organisms, which filled Sarmatic and Tortoniana tropical seas10-20 million years ago). Between them stands „the giant” with a length of over 2000 meters, 125 meters wide and 40 meters high. Surrounded on three sides by Camenca river and its tributary, Camencuta, the body of Butesti reef is limestone, which consists of the skeletons of corals, molluscs, seaweed. The rock is pierced by small caves that served as shelter for animals during glacial period and for man during prehistory. In the caves were discovered fossil remains of cave bears, tigers, lions, rhinos, mammoths and bisons.

Big Rock Reef: a fortress of nature. It is the most southern representative reef from coralier girdle of Middle Prut. It is located on south of Cobani village, having a length of 1000 meters, 100 meters width and relative height of 40 meters. The rivulet Camenca embraces the reef from three parts. This natural „fortress” was populated by people into the stone age. Now here found refuge primary steppe plants, rare animals. It was saved from destruction in 1988 by the intervention of ecologists.

„The Hundred Knolls”: still a mystery of nature. This monument is located between Braniste (Riscani) and Cobani (Glodeni) setllements. „The Hundred Knolls” is a part of  Prut river terraces, with an area of 1600 hectares, covered with over 3500 mounds of various shapes, with a height of 30 meters and a length from tens to hundreds meters. The complex covers a length of  8 km and a width ranging between 1,7 km and 2,3 km, parallel to Prut. The territory between mounds is complemented by dozens beautiful lakes, crystal water springs. Generally the territory is a lunar landscape, covered with rich steppe vegetation. The origin of these mounds is shrouded in mystery, described in many tales and legends. The scientists try to explain the appearance of knolls by massive movements of land and river activity. That or else the origin of more than 3500 mounds on an area of about 1600 ha still remains an enigma.

„At Fontal”: an aquatic pearl in Prut crown. Within „Royal Forest ” Natural Reservation near Cobani village, the relict lake „La Fontal” is situated, with an area of 23 ha. Once, when the river Prut flows, the lake was supplied with water. However, from construction of Costesti-Stinca artificial lake seasonal floods were stopped and the lake is going on degradation. Its specificity is that it is fed by several upward water springs, rare in Moldova, whose water is highly mineralized. Today, about 80% of the lake is covered by aquatic vegetation, reeds, rush and it is an ideal place for developing amphibians, reptiles, mammals and aquatic waders.

„Heronsʼ country”: a kingdom of birds. It is a unique colony of waders nesting on oaks. It is situated on the teritory of  „Royal Forest” Natural Reservation near Balatina village. The colony is composed of more than 1000 copies of Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), Night Heron (Hycticorex nycticarax) and Little Egret (Igretta garzetta).

Secular oaks: green chroniclers of our history. They are situated on the teritory of „Royal Forest” Natural Reservation near Moara Domneasca village. There are some lots with a total area of 108 ha with secular oaks, exceeding the age of 200-250 years, some of them reaching a height record of 30-35 meters. Nowhere in Moldova can be found a such group of old trees, that eloquently confessed the natural history of this region and former fame of our forests.

The bisons. In August 2005 in the „Royal Forest” Natural Reservation were brought three bisons (one male and two females). They came to our country being received in gift from the Polish state. Today within the reservation there are five bisons (two females and three males).
